  • Convocation - The Vice President of India, Shri M. Venkaiah Naidu has said that India has emerged as an attractive destination for global investors and asked educational institutions to maintain high standards and foster academic excellence. He was addressing the Convocation of Great Lakes Institute of Management, in Chennai.
  • Human Capital Management - The 15th Annual Convocation saw 624 students graduating this year across full-time and executive programs including PGPM, PGDM, PGXPM and PGPM (Flex). A total of 107 gold medals were awarded to nearly 95 graduands in the following categories – Academic toppers, Overall outstanding contribution, Dean’s merit list, Domain toppers, best Empirical Study and Committee contributors. Sai Medha Pradeep, from the PGPM batch of 2018 -19,  bagged four gold medals for the best academic topper, best outgoing student, marketing domain topper, and best empirical study, and received a cash prize of INR 4 lakhs.
  • International Entrepreneurship Conference - The International Entrepreneurship conference is an annual conference hosted by the Centre for Innovation & Entrepreneurship (CIE), Great Lakes Institute of Management. The conference acts as a platform to showcase innovations by budding entrepreneurs which helps them attain their goals effectively. The conference also encompasses the outlook of academicians and corporates to share their views on the current Entrepreneurial challenges.
  • Annual Alumni Meet - The Alumni Directorate, Great Lakes Institute of Management organized its Annual Alumni Meet on 20th & 21st January 2018 at its Manamai Campus. The two-day event saw several alumni across batches and programs gathering to renew friendships and relive their college years that consisted of power talk, game sessions, interactions, and entertainment.
  • Sanghamitra - Sangamitra is Great Lakes’ first fest of the academic year. It is an intra-college cultural and sports fest that gives the students a platform to showcase their talents. There is competition, fun and action as everyone gears up to cheer their teams. A range of games – Table Tennis, Chess, Throw ball, Basketball, Kho Kho, Badminton, Cricket, Volleyball etc. – bring high energy and a great ice breaker between the students.

Through the Term Zero initiative organized by the Great Lakes Institute of Management Chennai, its incoming students of the PGPM 2020-2021 batch, have received insights and perspectives not only from CXOs of leading companies but also professors and Deans of some world-renowned universities. Great Lakes also organizes the SWIM – Successful Women In Management, an annual event that celebrates women reigning in the business world, to inspire budding women entrepreneurs. This year, Dr Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, a global influencer, and a passionate philanthropist and the Chairperson and Managing Director of Biocon, Asia’s leading bio-pharmaceuticals enterprise, was a part of SWIM, as well as the Term Zero finale celebrations and addressed the students of GLIM through a live session. Her speech was extremely inspiring to the students. 

She divided her lecture into two different sections: 

How women excel in managing a crisis

How to turn a crisis into an opportunity

In her lecture, Dr Shaw addressed the most relevant and pressing issue at the moment – how the entire world is handling the pandemic. 

She started off by talking about how to make inferences from the various metrics and which ones matter the most; how Test Positives per tests done hold more value than overall positive, along with how to read into the Mortality Rate. She noted that just some time ago, the public was praising the governments of Karnataka and Kerala and suggesting other states adopt similar models, but now, their situation is currently grim.

Dr Shaw spoke about how handling this pandemic is no less than handling any crisis, which is the test of a true leader. When we look at countries like New Zealand and Taiwan, they serve as the best examples to illustrate how women are naturally capable leaders. The Prime Ministers of these respective countries have done a commendable job in curbing and controlling the pandemic and have swiftly brought things back to normal. She also mentioned that India also has an exemplary woman leader! Dr Shaw lauded KK Shailaja (popularly known as Shailaja Teacher), the minister of Health and Social Welfare for Kerala for her outstanding contribution to the State’s response to the virus, who was also honoured by the UN and the WHO. Dr Shaw also discussed the practices adopted at Biocon for sanitizing the office premises and safeguarding the safety and health of the employees, and how these initiatives were undertaken almost immediately. Biocon has also been sharing their best practices with NASSCOM and other IT enterprises. 

She also talked about India’s vaccine diplomacy and how this could be the soft power that we need to use to our advantage. India’s contributions and supply of vaccines to the world has already been about 60% of the total vaccines in the global market. The COVID-19 pandemic has provided a great opportunity to be a global leader.

On the subject of opportunities, she also illuminated on how to turn crisis into opportunity. The ability to transform a crisis into an opportunity is the true mark of successful organizations. Yet today, even the most successful ones are facing crises they’ve never faced before as the world is radically transforming and moving towards digitization – as is evidenced in the rise of Zoom, the video-conferencing application. Despite other services such as Cisco WebEx and Microsoft Teams, the user interface of Zoom is much easier to use and has great features. Dr Shaw mentioned that the idea of telemedicine or e-Medicine was once laughed at and dismissed easily, but today, it’s the only need of the hour! Apart from the health industry, restaurants, bars and office spaces are all rethinking on how to entertain and accommodate people with social distancing guidelines in place, which should be seen as an opportunity for architects and designers. 

Following her lecture, Dr Shaw took questions from the participants. When answering one of the questions, she talked about how today our biggest problem is the shortage of doctors and nurses and other medical professionals apart from the deficit of hospital beds. She also elaborated on how she would deal with this issue: arrange for on-the-job training for final year medicos, without waiting for the final exams to take place. When asked about what kind of advice she would give aspiring female entrepreneurs, she said, “My advice to future businesswomen is to not ask for advice. Your passion and the burning desire to take your idea to the market should direct you on how and where to start. You can take guidance at various junctures in your journey, but certainly not at the beginning.”

Inauguration Day at Great Lakes Chennai

July 14, 2020, was a landmark day not only in my life but also in the lives of my fellow batchmates. This is the PGDM Class of 2020-22, the Mighty Marathas of the prestigious Great Lakes Institute of Management, Chennai. On this day, we had our academic year’s inaugural ceremony with our beloved Uncle Bala. Our respected Dean, Dr Suresh Ramanathan, a student favourite since joining Great Lakes a year ago, shared his experiences at the Insitute, along with a few motivational words. 

The ceremony was skillfully conducted by Dr Vidya Mahambare, our programme director, and we, the 180 students of the batch, sitting in our homes, were very much a part of the virtual inauguration ceremony. Many of the cherished faculty members were present to welcome us into the huge, loving family of Great Lakes. Prof Eshwar Iyer, the head of the Admissions Committee, who was instrumental in selecting each and every one of us, was also present.

The ceremony began with a melodious singing performance by our senior, Lasya Priya, and then Uncle Bala spent his precious time welcoming us to Great Lakes. He spoke about how important it is to be positive during dire conditions like the current COVID-19 pandemic. He also spoke about learning with an open mind and using our left and right brains to be analytically sound, as well as being creatively diligent in attaining success in life. 

From his speech, it was obvious that he is a man of great faith and that he believes that ‘passion with compassion’ will make us not only successful in our careers but also better human beings. His words, “Your network is your net worth” have now been instilled in us. 

Uncle Bala also briefed us about the programme structure that we will follow before we move to campus learning. His energy and humility have inspired me to believe that maybe one day, I could also make a difference to society.

Dr Suresh Ramanathan was very crisp in his words and he spoke about increasing our bandwidth and indulging in exploring new ideas. He assured us that, sooner or later, we will get to the campus but this, right now, is the time to prepare for upcoming opportunities. He encouraged us to keep thinking out of the box and continue innovating. He added that we should foster an entrepreneurial drive within ourselves, and “nourish the soil before we sow the seeds”. The ceremony ended on this high note and I’m extremely looking forward to beginning my journey at Great Lakes Chennai.

Founder, Chairman of the board and Dean Emeritus, Great Lakes Institute of Management, Chennai, India J L Kellogg Distinguished Professor (Emeritus in service) of Accounting & Information Management, Northwestern University, USA of Finance & Accounting


A teacher by qualification but an academic entrepreneur by choice, Bala Balachandran is one of the best known names in the Indian and American Management Education landscape. His teaching days began as early as in 1960 while as a student at Annamalai University, India from where he moved to Carnegie Mellon, Dayton and finally Kellogg at Northwestern University in the USA where he served as Distinguished Professor for almost 35 years till his retirement in 2008.

With more than 100 research publications and several books to his credit, Prof.Bala’s research interests focus on Strategic Profitability through Customer Centric business strategies. His groundbreaking work in the areas of accounting, forecasting, and strategic decision support systems has earned him numerous scholastic honors, awards, and fellowships. He serves as a consultant to the senior management of many Companies, Educational Institutions as well as the Governments of the United States, India and Malaysia.

He has been at the helm of creating top-rated b-schools and Management programs in the USA, UK, Israel, Thailand, Germany, Malaysia etc. His recent book ‘Living Legends – Learning Lessons’ was published in 2016 profiling 10 leaders (from India and the US) and their distinctive leadership styles. His next book written in collaboration with the legendary T N Seshan titled ‘Yogyathwa’ is about ‘access’ to powerful leadership was released in March 2017.

Prof.Bala has been a key player in revamping the Management education landscape in India since the early nineties. He part of the team that recruited the first set of faculty members for IIM Bangalore in the late 60’s. He has been instrumental in designing the MBA Program at MDI, Gurgaon which was a collaborative effort between the Indian Government, Kellogg School of Management and the UNDP. He was a part of the founding team of the ISB at Hyderabad and chaired the Curriculum and Dean Search committees. Setting up Great Lakes Institute of Management in 2004 in his hometown was the logical next step for the professor turned edu-preneur. Great Lakes now has a presence in Gurgaon as well.

Great Lakes is Prof.Bala’s dream project of putting Chennai on the International Management Education Map. He is a full time faculty member in the area of Accounting and Finance and Chairs the Academic Advisory Council at Great Lakes apart from serving as the Dean and Chairman of the school. The school has grown from strength to strength and is already recognized as one of the top 10 b-schools in the country and has secured prestigious international accreditations such as AMBA, AMDISA etc. The Government of India conferred on him, the ‘Padmashri’ in 2001, in recognition of his contribution towards higher education in India. He is also the recipient of the prestigious AIMA - Kewal Nohria Award for Academic Leadership in Management Education for 2017 and the ‘Jeevan Gaurav Puraskar' at 3rd National Teachers Congress organized by the MIT World Peace University in 2019.

Suresh Ramanathan

Dean & Principal, Distinguished Professor of Marketing & Strategy of Marketing & Strategy


Dr. Suresh Ramanathan is the Dean & Principal of Great Lakes Institute of Management. Prior to joining Great Lakes, Dr Suresh was an Associate Professor of Marketing at the prestigious University of Chicago Booth School of Business between 2002-2011, and later, Professor of Marketing for close to 8 years at the Mays Business School at Texas A&M University, holding the David R. Norcom’73 Endowed Professorship. Suresh joined the world of academia in 1997 after spending ten years in industry in India. He received his Ph.D. from NYU’s Stern School of Business in 2002. Suresh has a B.Tech. in Chemical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi and an MBA from the Indian Institute of Management, Calcutta. Prior to joining the Ph.D. program at Stern, Suresh worked with Brooke Bond (now Unilever) in their tea and coffee business for three years and then moved to the world of media and advertising, where he worked with JWT, Lintas, MTV, and McCann Erickson for seven years. He was part of the core leadership team at MTV India, helping launch the channel in India in 1996, and then head of media research at McCann-Erickson India before leaving for the US.

Vidya Mahambare

Professor, Chairperson, UB-GL Centre for Banking Excellence of Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, International Trade, Development Economics


Dr. Vidya Mahambare is currently Professor of Economics at Great Lakes Institute of Management and is also the Program Director for the institute's two year PGDM program since 2016. In addition, in her capacity as a chair professor of Great Lakes-Union Bank Centre for Banking Excellence, she is the conveyor of the centre's annual finance conference since April 2018. She has experience in teaching the PGPM, PGDM, PGPM-Flex and PGXPM batches at Great Lakes Institute of Management, as well as teaching Macro and Micro-Economics to RBI's newly recruited officers under the customized corporate program at the RBI Staff College, Chennai. Prior to joining the institute, she was a Director and Principal Economist at CRISIL, a Standards and Poor's global analytical company providing ratings, research and policy advisory. She has also been the Independent Director on the Board of Directors of SMERA Rating Agency, India, and a member of the Economic Affairs Committee, ASSOCHAM, Tamil Nadu. Earlier, Vidya was with Cardiff Business School, UK, from 2001 to 2005 where she had moved after completing her doctorate from Lancaster Management School, UK. At Cardiff, she taught courses related to international economics, microeconomics, modern business enterprise, and econometrics. During the same period, she was a research associate at Liverpool Research Group in Macroeconomics, UK.

Dr. Suresh Srinivasan, is a PhD (Strategy) from IIT Madras, a Chartered Accountant (All India Rank Holder), Cost Accountant and an MBA from Bradford Business School, Bradford, UK.

He has more than 33 years’ experience in a wide range of manufacturing, banking, service and infrastructure industries, both in India and abroad. Has worked for 8 years in Emirates Airlines, the largest carrier in the Middle East across functions including Strategy, Finance and Accounting across various businesses of the airline that includes Airline, Airports, Financial Services, Security services, Hospitality and international joint ventures.

He has also worked with other leading companies like Tata Steel and Industrial Development Bank of India. During his tenure with the French-American joint venture company ETPM – McDermott, a Texas based oil and gas infrastructure company, covering Middle East and Asia Pacific regions, his role was focused into infrastructure project tendering, analysis and project financing.

Current roles include, Professor Strategy at Great Lakes and Associate Director with International Infrastructure Consultants (IIC) in Chennai, a niche financial and management advisory firm focused into infrastructure. He is also a partner in LearnBiz Simulations, providing simulation based experiential management learning to academics and corporate.

Regularly conducts management development programs and consulted with companies across sectors like manufacturing, automobiles, airlines, ports, information technology, pharmaceuticals, business process management, insurance, earth moving equipment, banking, financial services, healthcare, infrastructure and construction. Ms. Umayal is an academician with thirteen years of experience across Engineering Colleges in Chennai. Prior to this assignment,she was with Sri Venkateswara College of Engineering,Sriperumbhadhur at various capacities as assistant professor, senior lecturer and lecturer. Sanjoy Sircar is currently Professor of Finance and Director, PGPM. He started his professional career as a Chartered Accountant with Pricewaterhouse Coopers in Assurance and Advisory. While pursuing his doctoral studies in the US, he entered the world of academia and was a faculty in the Finance area at the Fox School of Management, Temple University, Philadelphia and Rutgers, State University of New Jersey. Professor of Finance


Mahalakshmi holds her Master’s in Business Administration, Master of Commerce from Annamalai University and Bachelors in Commerce from Valliammall College for Women affiliated to Madras University. Prior to joining Great lakes, she was associated with Teledata Informatics Ltd., Chennai, wherein she played the role of an Internal Subject Matter Expert (SME) for the courses like CPT - CA, Business Studies, Accountancy & Economics. She has more than six years of teaching experience. Her teaching interests include Data Visualization using Tableau & Power BI, Investment Banking, Financial Risk Management, Security Markets, Portfolio Management and Statistics. She has also tutored statistical software tools like SPSS, AMOS, SMART PLS & E-Views for Management students. Her research interests include Consumer Behavior and Behavioral Finance.

Elankumaran S

Professor of OB & HRM


S. Elankumaran is currently Professor of Organizational Behavior & Business Ethics. He has earned his PhD in Commerce from Pondicherry University. He has over two decades of teaching and research experience in the field of management. Prior to joining Great Lakes, he was associated with premier institutions like Management Centre for Human Values (MCHV) at the Indian Institute of Management Calcutta, T. A. Pai Management Institute and Amrita School of Business.He has taught courses like ‘Management by Human Values’, ‘Business Ethics’, ‘Ethics in International Business’, ‘Corporate Social Responsibility’, ‘Organizational Behavior’ and ‘Power & Politics in Workplace’.His initial research interest was in Organizational Behavior, where he conducted research on topics like personality, organizational climate, job involvement and job satisfaction. His present research focus is on ‘Corporate Social Responsibility’, ‘Corporate Codes of Ethics/Conduct’, ‘Cross-cultural Study on Ethics’ and ‘Leadership Spirit: Insights from the Past’. His research and writings have appeared in refereed international journals such as International Journal of Value-Based Management, Journal of Human Values, Journal of Business Ethics and Corporate Social Responsibility and Environmental Management.Further, he was involved in training over 2000 senior managers in his areas of expertise.

Angelin Vilma .G

Professor of Human Resources and Strategy


Ms Angelin Vilma holds her Master’s in Business Administration from St. Mary’s School of Management studies affiliated to Madras University and Bachelors in computer science From Alagappa University , she is pursuing her Ph.D in Mother Teresa women’s university , Prior to this she worked in Dhanalakshmi Srinivasan College of Engineering and Technology as an Assistant professor for about 6 Years and successfully offered courses in some of the challenging areas of HRM and Strategy , she is also having 1 year of experience as HR Executive in Quantum leap consulting where she deliberately handled Employee Engagement ,Recruitment and Event Management. During her tenure, Apart from academics, she was a Placement coordinator and Event Organiser.

Anti ragging

It is brought to the notice of all AICTE approved Institutions, students and other various stakeholders that ragging is a criminal offence and AICTE has already framed its Regulation which has been notified vide F.No. 37-3/Legal/AICTE/2009 dated July 1, 2009 (available on AICTE web portal aicte-india.org) on curbing the menace of ragging in AICTE approved Technical Institutions, in order to prohibit, prevent and eliminate the scourge of ragging in AICTE approved Technical Institutions.

The above Regulation is mandatory and applies to all AICTE approved Institutions. Therefore, all these Institutions should take necessary steps for its proper implementation such as: - 

  • Constitution of Anti-Ragging Committee and Anti-Ragging Squad,
  • Obtaining Undertakings at the time of admission and allotment of Hostel accommodation,
  • A dedicated cadre of Warden (s),
  • Appointing Professional Counselor(s) for Freshers,
  • Erection of Posters/Banners displaying provisions of law, punishments, etc.

 

Any violation of AICTE Regulations as cited above by an AICTE approved Institution or an instance wherein any Institution fails to take adequate steps to prevent ragging or fails to act in accordance with these regulations or fails to punish perpetrators or incidents of ragging suitably, AICTE shall call for punitive action against erring Institutions as per provisions of the Approval Process Handbook.
