IIT Madras is a residential institute, provides accommodation to all its students in 18 independent hostels. It provides accommodation facility to the boys with all necessary facilities. The Hostel Office is located within the hostel premises. Every student who has been admitted to the institute is required to pay the prescribed hostel seat rent and establishment charges along with a refundable hostel mess caution deposit.

Each hostel is working under the supervision of warden. It is mandatory to follow the rules and regulations by all hostellers for safety purpose. Sindhu, Pampa, Mahanadhi and Tamiraparani have capacity of accommodating 1200 students and seven-storeyed whereas all the other institute are three or four storeyed.

IIT Madras, Institute provides accommodation facility to the girls with all necessary facilities. same as Boys' Hostel. Following are the girls' hostels in the campus:
IIT Madras was established in 1959. The Department of Humanities and Social Sciences at IIT Madras offered management education in the form of M. Tech. (Industrial Engineering) from 1959. A MBA program was started by the department in 2001. The Department of Management Studies was established in the year 2004 as a home to the popular Master in Business Administration course being taught since August 2001. Besides the MBA program, the department has research programs at the Master’s (MS) and Doctoral (PhD) levels, an MS (Entrepreneurship) program and an Executive MBA program for the middle and senior level executives. The department is also a partner in multi-institutional Diploma program (PGPEX - VLM) for Visionary Leaders in Manufacturing, along with IIM Calcutta and IIT Kanpur. Consultancy and Executive Development programs are some of the other activities undertaken by the Department.
The MBA programme is a two-year programme, structured with courses spread over seven quarters and about five to six courses per quarter. The first year contains core courses that are compulsory for all students, whereas the second year mostly has electives and a few core courses. In the summer break between the first and second year, students work on a summer project with a company. Apart from regular academics, course activities include taking courses on audit, field visits, participating in management workshops, organizing professional events, and working on live business projects. The programme includes three core courses on Industrial and Business Domains spread over the last three quarters. Students of the programme can opt for auditing courses (i.e. taking classes but not assignments or exams and not receiving credits) from any of the elective courses offered by the Department of Management Studies or from the more than 300 courses offered by the other 14 departments in the institute. Co-curricular courses offered at the department include business communication and presentation skills, negotiation skills, teamwork and conflict resolution skills, time management, business etiquette, and foreign languages.

Graduates (or professional qualification equivalent to that of a University degree recognized by the UGC) in any discipline with first class or 60% marks (55% for SC/ST/PD) earned in their degree from a recognized/reputed University.
Final year students (of the above-mentioned programme) are also eligible to apply. Such candidates, if selected, will be admitted provisionally, on the condition that they meet all requirements for the qualifying degree before the start of the program and will produce provisional certificate of completion within two months of joining the program.
IIT Graduates who have obtained a CGPA of 8 and above on 10 are exempted from CAT score.
Institute Merit-cum-Means Scholarship: 67% Tuition fee exempted to Students whose parent's annual income should not be more than INR 450000.
Institute SC/ST Scholarship
Students whose parent's annual income should not be more than INR 450000 will be get free messing (basic menu only) with pocket allowance of INR 250 p.m. and exemption of hostel seat rent. (Tuition fee is exempted for all SC/ST students).
Kanchi Kamakoti Jagadguru Sri Chandrasekarendra Saraswathi Endowment Award: On the basis of Merit cum Means. Parents annual income up to INR 550000. One time payment of INR 2500.
